Beautiful James! Thank you for pointing this out to me. What an adventure! You did not say when this trip took place, and I am curious. The atmosphere sounds very much like Algiers with the military presence. That was in 1992, armed soldiers on every corner. I was glad not to be alone on that week-long work assignment. You brought back memories! Thank you.

Thank you, Sharron! December, 1974. Almost half a century ago. Hard to believe. Your situation there seemed more serious than was mine - I never did discover the why of our border crossing troubles. Maybe just anti-West sentiment. Now I'm curious. Were you a reporter/journalist at the time you were there? I'm thinking you've traveled a lot on "assignment". : )

Assignment, yes, but not journalism. I traveled a lot as an independent educational consultant and teacher-trainer in English as a Second Language. The brief sojourn in Algiers was part of a posting through the Fulbright Program, based in Italy. Most of my training was all around the US, though.

Ah. yes. A teacher. I would think it has served you well along with your natural writing abilities. How cool to be able to travel and teach!

The best part of being a private educational consultant was that I set my own work calendar, leaving space between jobs for traveling for pleasure.! The good old days. I collected so many memories. I imagine you have had many varied and and unusual jobs in your own history.
